Fr. Hogan named moderator for the Northeast Region
Published January 29, 2010

DETROIT – Fr. Timothy Hogan will become regional moderator of the Northeast Region of the archdiocese, which includes Macomb and St. Clair counties, effective Tuesday, Feb. 2.

He will succeed Bishop Daniel Flores, who will be installed as the new bishop of Brownsville, Texas that same day.

"I am grateful that Fr. Hogan has accepted this position and know that we will benefit from his compassionate leadership, wisdom, and deep faith," Archbishop Allen Vigneron said Tuesday in announcing the appointment.

The announcement said Fr. Hogan will continue his duties as pastor of Holy Family Parish in Novi.

The position of regional moderator was formerly called regional bishop, although even then an episcopal vicar could be appointed to fulfill the role of a regional bishop if not enough active auxiliaries were available.

With Bishop Francis Reiss now the only active Detroit auxiliary bishop, the new structure for the archdiocese announced by the archbishop last month renames the position regional moderator.

The change is in line with the archbishop's intention that the number of regions will remain stable regardless of the number of auxiliary bishops.

Besides Fr. Hogan, the line up of regional moderators will be Bishop Reiss for the South Region, Msgr. Donald Hanchon for the Central Region, and Msgr. John Zenz for the Northwest Region.

Prior to his 2007 appointment as pastor of Holy Family Parish, Fr. Hogan was a chaplain in the U.S. Navy, having served in both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Earlier assignments included pastor of St. Christopher Parish, Detroit, and associate pastor at several parishes throughout the archdiocese.

He was elected to the Presbyteral Council this past fall and has served as the vicar for the Farmington-Southfield Vicariate.
